Our Programmes
Majlis’ founder Flavia Agnes, a victim of domestic violence herself, walked out of an abusive marriage at a time where it was inconceivable to do so - with three children, no education and no family support. She initially started the Women's Centre, a space for women and children facing violence to support each other. However, her disappointment with the response of the legal system in accessing justice for her own case encouraged her to get a degree in law and start Majlis - a legal centre for women and children.
Today a group of young dynamic women lawyers and social workers at Majlis offer legal, social, psychological and economic support to women and children facing sexual and domestic violence and are actively engaged in addressing gaps and challenges in the system, advocacy and training. Flavia Agnes has successfully managed to transfer the mantle on them to carry forward this work. ‘Majlis’ means a gathering of people to resolve a problem, was registered as a Society and Public Trust in 1991. Majlis’ tagline:
